We have a children's book that is all about birds. In it, it shows pictures and describes various birds. One in particular is the robin and the book explains that robins appear when spring is near.
WELL... this morning during breakfast the kids announced that they saw a robin! Sure enough, there was one lone robin investigating our yard. We rationalized that it must be the grandpa robin and he was sent to check out our yard, making sure there are enough materials for everyone to build nests as well as plenty of trees to live in.
The kids watched it for a while and are now cutting pieces of Christmas ribbon to put in the yard for the robins to use in their nests. How neat would it be if we actually find a nest that has our ribbon in it??

Fun Friday Fotos
Here are some pictures from our week. Ruth is doing much better and since Tuesday she has taken 3 long naps/day (no crying when we lay her down or when she wakes up!) The kids have been coloring... a lot. Isaiah even proudly lifted his shirt to show us an ink massterpiece on his tummy. :) Wednesday we received our first snow of the season - we only got about an inch and it only lasted a few hours, but it was fun while here!

Ruth's ears
For the last couple of weeks, Ruth has been waking up a lot at night and not napping well. At first we thought it was that she's develoing sleep patterns (which we knew occurs around 4 months.) Then we thought maybe she was becoming more social and wanted to see us instead of sleep. Parenting always has a way of making us realize how little we know and how little in control we are!
This past week, however, her right eye started to water, and then we knew - she couldn't sleep because of ear pain. This has happened three times in her short 5 months of life. I started giving her ear pain drops and tylenol and that would allow her to get a little sleep and in the meantime, Jake and I prayed constantly for wisdom. Our pediatrician had said that if she gets anymore ear infections that we would need to consider tubes.
In the meantime, we had multiple instances where friends, blogs or random mail mentioned using chiropractic techniques for ear pain. After reading about how it was suppose to help (and a long night of being up with Ruth and praying for wisdom during those midnight hours) we decided the next morning to call a local family chiropractor who works with children.
We felt at peace with it (and optimistic!) Worst case scenario, we would waste $35 and end up going to the Pediatrician anyways. Best case scenario, it would help. Either way, we would feel better knowing we had tried every available option before defaulting to another anitbiotic or surgery. The following is what we had read and it didn't seem harmful or painful - especially in light of what we knew antibiotics do to her body:
"The chiropractic adjustment works by relaxing the neck muscles which allows the Eustachian tubes to drain properly. It rarely takes more than 1 visit. Studies have shown that regular chiropractic care can keep away recurring ear infections. Many children who have been told they needed tubes in their ears are able to avoid surgery, by visiting the chiropractor."
We went. The chiropractor was very informative about how the body ws designed and how chiropractic techniques could help (which I had read about in detail the night before.) He looked in her ears and noted that her right ear was full of fluid and pressure. He told me which area of her neck would be off a little (likely from squeezing through the birth canal at birth) IF that was the reason she was gettig ear infections. After evaluating Ruth, he found and adjusted three areas, one of which he felt was clearly blocking the right eustachian tube. No tears, no pain involved, and in a few minutes we were leaving.
I'm not going to lie, I wasn't sure that it would work, but knew that 1) we discerned God wanted us to do this before going to the pediatrician and 2) what we had read and what the doctor explained made perfect sense - not to mention that we felt we had nothing to lose by going.
That night, we put Ruth to bed without any pain medicine and she slept 5 hours before waking up - waking up happy and squealing I might add. Yesterday she took 3 good long naps (2 hours!) and last night, we put her to bed at 7pm and she woke up at 11pm happy and hungry. She went right back to sleep after eating and next thing we knew, we heard laughter and squealing over the monitor at 6:45am.
While I know there's a chance this could all be coincidence, I also know that we had prayed for wisdom, God gave us a clear direction to go, and Ruth is now happy, well rested and pain free. We are so, so thankful for a Creator who knows our bodies inside and out... Thankful that he freely gives us wisdom when we ask and thankful that he has given us amazing medical professionals that are not only knowledgable in their field, but also openly talk about God as the creator of our children when they advise us. Oh... and also thankful that both our pediatrician and chiropractor are less than 2 miles from our home!

2 year stats
Yesterday Isaiah had his 2 year well visit. He passed all of the developmental tests perfectly. For my memory, here's Isaiah's at 2 years:
- 3 feet (almost 90th percentile)
- 29 pounds (almost 60th percentile)
- 2T pants
- 3T shirts (can you tell he's long and skinny?)
- size 8-9 shoes
- Working on molars - once they're in he'll have 20 teeth
- Eats non stop (or at least asks for food nonstop)
- Runs non stop (or jumps, or hops, or skips)
- When he settles down he likes to read books - I'm not sure if it's the reading of the books or snuggling that he likes, but he'll do this as long as you allow.
- He'll also sit still to color or play with playdough
- Favorite foods are all of the yummy things that aren't healthy (pizza, corn dogs, chicken nuggets, grilled cheese) as well as any dairy product (string cheese, yogurt, cheese) and fruit (bananas and strawberries topping the list)
- Incredibly ornery; likes to pick on Emelyn and love on Ruth
- Goes to bed at 7pm (sleeps about 12 hours each night) and takes a good 1.5-3 hour nap each day.
- All in all (assuming he's had sleep and food) he's a happy boy!

Daddy's Bible
Isaiah came proudly walking into the kitchen last night and exclaimed, "At daddy's ible!" (That's daddy's bible!) We said yes it is, and he sat down to "ead." (Read.) It made my heart melt that at such a young age he knows a bible is to be read. Now if he'd just turn to Ephesians 6 and read about obeying parents (immediately, with a joyful heart) it would really do my heart (and patience!!) some good!!
Fun at home
With some yucky viruses still going around and a baby who does NOT need to get them, we've continued to stay home the last few weeks and just this week started getting out a little more. That said, here are some pictures I've taken lately. The kids have enjoyed nice weather outside as well as some fun days inside. The most fun has probably come from the piano - we've been playing and singing lots of songs - as well as an order of air filters from amazon... the filters came in a large box that provided hours of entertainment for two imaginitive kiddos!
Happy Birthday Isaiah!
Isaiah turned 2 on February 1st. Grandpa and Grandma C came down to spend the weekend with us as we celebrated our little man. Here are some fun pictures:
I am so glad we finally caught this expression on picture... he regularly gives us the "stink eye" as though to say, "what are you looking at?"
Worn out and exhausted, Isaiah agreed to rock with Grandma before bed one night and he ended up falling asleep - so sweet.
